London, ON duo Jane Carmichael (vocals, uke) and Kevin Kennedy (vocals, guitar) officially formed as The Marrieds in December 2010 when they posted 3 snow day songs on YouTube during London’s “Snowmageddon.” The songs received over 10 000 views in a couple of days and captured the attention of CBC Radio, making them “The Sound of the Day” across Canada.
The couple released their self-titled debut record (2011), a sweet and humble concept album recorded with producer/engineer, Bob Breen (with help from daughter Dani, at 2 perhaps the youngest tape op in history). Each song that makes up this musical tribute to marriage sets the mood and perfectly leads into the next. The resulting story is emotionally complex, has moments of doubt, and ends joyously with a postscript of looking fifty years ahead through the story of Carmichael’s parents in “The Big 5-0.” To create the natural and organic sound to go along with their story, The Marrieds recorded to tape on a vintage OTARI MTR 90 with a SONY MXP3036 desk, performed as much as possible live off the floor, and refrained from auto-tuning and cutting and pasting.
The Marrieds have shared the stage with Kathleen Edwards, Bahamas, Danny Michel, Colleen Brown, Ian Thomas and Meaghan Smith, and were showcased in the Toronto Independent Music Awards 2012, Canadian Music Week 2012, NXNE 2012, and Indie Week Canada 2012. Their nominations include a 2013 Jack Richardson Music Award in the Folk/Roots Category, 2012 Jack Richardson Music Award in the Fan Favourite category, a 2012 London Music Award in the Folk/Roots Category and a Toronto Independent Music Award in the Folk/Roots Category. The Marrieds were voted Regional Top 20 in CBC’s Searchlight Competition.
